The observation of whales and dolphins, or whale watching is a way of ecotourism, which consists in the watching and contemplation of these animals in their natural habitat. The whale specie that is most watched is the emblematic cachalot. However it is also possible to watch blue whales, sardines, common whales, among many others. As regards the dolphins, it is frequent to observe porpoises, common dolphins, Atlantic spotted dolphins and striped dolphins.
The highest activity occasion for whale and dolphin watching is between April and September. The percentage of whale and/or dolphin sights on each trip to sea is around 95%, which allows us to say that visiting Pico Island is worthwhile!
